Calculating Handicaps in Matchplay

Singles : Lowest handicap player gives strokes to the other based on the full difference between the two handicaps.
Foursomes: Each pair adds up their handicaps and the lower handicap pair gives strokes to the other based on half the difference between the two teams.
Four Ball Better Ball : The lowest handicap player gives strokes to the other three players based on three quarters of the difference between the lowest handicap and that of each player.

Calculating Handicaps in Strokeplay

Singles : Full handicap deducted from the total score.
Foursomes: Half of the total handicap of the both players is deducted from the total score.
Four Ball Better Ball : Players receive three-quarters of their handicaps, strokes taken according to the Index.
Stableford Singles : Full handicap with strokes deducted at each hole according to the Stroke Index of the course.
Stableford Greensomes: 6/10ths of lower handicap player PLUS 4/10ths higher handicap player, with strokes deducted at each hole according to the Stroke Index of the course.
Stableford Four Ball Better Ball : Players receive three-quarters of their handicaps, with strokes deducted at each hole according to the Stroke Index of the course.
Silloth : Take the difference between the two handicaps of the players and subtract this from 18. Divide this number by 3 and then subtract from the lower handicap and that is the playing handicap of the Silloth pair.

The table below shows the number of strokes given based on 3/4, together with 7/8 which are sometimes used in Stableford. 6/10 of the lower player and 4/10 of the higher player are used in Greensomes.

A Brief Guide on how to adjust your own Handicap.

A players Exact Handicap is his handicap calculated to one decimal place. A players Playing Handicap is his Exact Handicap calculated to the nearest whole number (0.5 is rounded upwards). The Buffer Zone is the margin within which an exact handicap remains unchanged.

Handicaps are divided into the following categories each with a Buffer Zone:

A Qualifying Competition is any competition in which Medal Play Conditions prevail and a CSS is calculated. A Qualifying Score is any score including a no return returned in a Qualifying Competition
The Nett Differential is the difference (+ or -) between the nett score returned in a Qualifying Competition and the CSS after the application of Clause 19.8

The Standard Scratch Score (SSS) is the score allotted to an 18 hole golf course and is the score that a scratch player is expected to return in ideal conditions over a measured course.
The Competition Scratch Score CSS) is the adjustment that may be necessary to the SSS to take account of weather and course conditions and must be calculated for all Qualifying Competitions.

Clause 19.8
For all holes completed, the player's Nett Differential is reduced by the number of strokes taken on any hole in excess of nett double bogey.
For holes with no score recorded, a score of nett double bogey is entered.

Alteration of Handicaps
If a player after the application of Clause 19.8 returns a score with a nett differential:

General Play
Whenever the Handicap Committee of the players Home Club consider that a players handicap is too high or too low and does not reflect his current ability adjustment must be made within the guidelines set out in Clause 19 of the Handicapping Scheme.
Handicap Committees are required to conduct an annual review of Handicaps.

Example:

Player A, Medal round, Gross score = 84, CSS = 71, Handicap = 17 (Exact handicap = 16.6).

84 - 17 = net score 67

71 - 67 = nett differential 4

Category = 3. therefore adjustment per stroke = 0.3

(Buffer zone = 0 to +3 not relevant in this case)

NEW exact handicap = 16.6 - [ 4 x 0.3 ], equals (16.6 - 1.2), equals 15.4

NEW playing handicap = 15
